If you used silk flower petals for the flower girl to drop down the aisle, then chances are you have a lot of petals left over.

This was true for my oldest son’s wedding. We had a ton of petals left over and because I have helped decorate so many weddings, I decided to keep them for “just in case” someone else needed them.

While trying to organize all my crafting supplies, I ran back across my big bag of silk flower petals and I thought wouldn’t it be great to make some type of keepsake for my daughter-in-law with these petals. That’s exactly what I did and below shows how easy and inexpensive it is to make a flower petal keepsake.

These are the supplies you will need:

  • Flower petals
  • A piece of cardboard
  • A lid
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Glue gun & glue sticks

Start by using the lid to draw an outline of a circle onto the carboard so that you can cut the circle out with the scissors.

Next use the glue gun to dab glue to the pointed end of the petal. Place the petal on the cardboard. The petals should be spaced out so that there is a slight overlap. Remember that it will be almost impossible to move once placed on the cardboard.

Continue gluing the petals down until you have reached a full circle.

Next you will pick a starting point for the next layer of petals. Try to place the petals between the gaps of the petals from the outside.

Keep adding new layers until you reach the desired amount you want for your keepsake. See how you can use it for decorative purposes below:

Now I am creating a decorative hanging flower so there is a little more work to complete it because I want to make more layers.

Because I want to make more layers, I use the pen to push the petals down in the center. Below I cut the petal in half and glue it in. I used every piece to create the center of the flower.

You can use anything to create the core but I glued some acrylic beads into the center (these were left over from another crafting project) which gave it a beautiful touch.

You can use any kind of beads, ribbon or string to go around the edge to cover the cardboard or you can do what I did below to make it blend in.

I took the outermost layer of petals and began gluing them down to the back of the cardboard.

Just make sure that you have only the outermost layer of petals and that the flowers overlap on the backside of the cardboard.

The overlapping of the petals ensures that there is no cardboard showing through.

Now you have the finished keepsake minus the string to hang it with. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any purple yarn, string or ribbon but it is still a beautiful and easy project to do!
