Mexican-American Culture
Cinco de Mayo has become a very popular celebration for the Mexican-American culture in the United States. It is often confused with Mexico’s Independence Day which is celebrated on September 16th, where Mexico declared independence from Spain.
Celebrating Mexican culture and heritage at home.
Normally celebrations would include parades, festivals and special events but due to the COVID-19 virus, people are not able to gather this year to celebrate. Being at home doesn’t mean you can’t do anything to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Decorating, preparing food and music are just a few ways that you can celebrate!
Check out these ideas for a home celebration:
1) Taco Bar – make your own taco bar with all the toppings for your perfect taco. You can even try out this traditional Mexican guacamole recipe: QUACAMOLE
2) Music – listen to banda, mariachi, norteño, and ranchera to set the mood.
3) Learn a dance – here is the “Mexican Hat Dance” to get you started:
4) Make homemade maracas – Create your own music by making homemade maracas. Here are two methods: MARACAS
5) Put up decorations – Decorate with your own DIY papel picado banners.
6) Mix up a margarita – Mix up your favorite margarita on the rocks or frozen: MARGARITA
7) Create a festive photo booth frame – Take pictures to share with your family and friends online.
