When my boys were young, I remember having to rush around every morning looking for socks, shoes and everything else that you can imagine trying to make sure they got to school on time. If there was something special going on at school, I wouldn’t remember until the last minute so that became it’s own beast to conquer.

Now that my granddaughter lives with us, we are doing things a little smarter this go around so that the mornings go a little smoother. Here’s what we’ve implemented so far:

1 – The first thing I did was buy a 6-shelf closet organizer. Since there is 5 days in a school week, on Sunday evenings clothes are chosen and put in the bottom 5 cubbies for the whole week. The top cubby is used for her dance outfits so it easy to get her ready for dance on Wednesdays. This saves sooooo much time in the mornings because nobody is fighting about what she does or doesn’t want to wear.

2 – Next came the dry erase wall calendar. This is a visual reminder of all activities going on for the month including school activities, dance and Girl Scouts. If there is something that requires an action or something that needs to be bought, we know exactly how long we have until it’s due. (You can buy colored dry erase markers to make it more visually stimulating.) Awesome tool to use!

3 – Pick and prepare all the snacks, lunches and water bottles the night before. This too saves time when you have a child that cannot make decisions on the drop of a dime. My granddaughter changes her mind several times before she makes a final decision so by making the choices the night before, it saves a lot time. All you have to do is grab and go!

4 – The final way that we use to save time is a shoe rack by the door. It has adjustable shelves so that we can use the top layer for her book bag and shoes can be put on the bottom rack and underneath on the floor. Not only does it look more organized, time isn’t wasted on hunting her book bag or finding matching shoes. Simple but effective.

  1. I already Have the 6 shelf idea going- now im loving the shoE rack idea. Thats next. Saves so much time and energy! I tried using a milk/file crate to hold shoes anD book bag on top But it wasnt “permanent” enough

  2. Our family calendar is something that has really helped us to stay on track. It is nice to just be able to glance at the calendar rather than trying to check multiple places when trying to schedule something. Much like you, I also have a lot of shelf type organizers. They are really helpful with keeping things visible and accessible!
