Who don’t have a favorite Christmas movie to watch every year? Once you find that one favorite, somehow it becomes a tradition to watch it every year.

That’s exactly what happened when we sat down to watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation together for the first time. It became our favorite Christmas movie so the following year, I bought it for my husband for Christmas so that we would always have it. We made a tradition of watching it with our kids every year from that point forward. Now our kids are grown but me and husband still take one evening during the holiday season to sit down and watch it together.

If you don’t have a favorite movie to watch each year, check out the best top 10 movies that I recommend to start your own Christmas movie tradition.

10) Scrooged (1988) – Adaption of the traditional Christmas carol story, Bill Murray plays the selfish “scrooge” character and is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future on Christmas Eve. Hopefully they can get him to change his ways before it’s too late.

9) The Santa Clause (1994) – When Santa falls from the roof of Scott’s house (Tim Allen), by default he is to unknowingly become the next Santa Claus. His son is the only one who accepts that his dad is now Santa.

8) Home Alone (1990) – Who wouldn’t want to travel to Paris for a family Christmas vacation? In this movie there are so many people going, Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) gets left behind. It was nice being home alone for a little bit but now there are thieves trying to break in and Kevin is the only one there to protect the family home.

7) Jingle All the Way (1996) – Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the character of a dad struggling to get a last minute present for his son. He will go to almost any lengths to get that special gift.

6) Elf (2003) – Buddy (Will Ferrell) was raised at the North Pole but when he discovers that he is a human, he wants to go out in the real world to find his birth family. Elf at heart, Buddy brings holiday cheer to the big city.

5) How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) – Bringing the book by Dr. Seuss to the big screen, Jim Carrey does an outstanding job playing the role of the Grinch. Will the Grinch steal Christmas from Whoville or will a little girl named Cindy help him find his Christmas spirit?

4) National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989) – The Griswold family is getting ready to celebrate Christmas with the whole family at their house. Clark (Chevy Chase) is doing everything he can to make it a great memory but as we all know from their past adventures, nothing goes exactly as planned.

3) A Christmas Story (1983) – All Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) wants for Christmas is Red Rider BB gun. Even though everyone thinks he will put his eye out, Ralphie becomes obsessed with getting this BB gun for Christmas. Come Christmas he will see if he gets what he asked for.

2) Miracle on 34th Street (1947) – Do you believe there could be a real Santa? In this movie, Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) claims to be the real Santa and he will have to plead his case to the court. Is he insane or could he actually be the real Santa?

And the top spot goes to one of the best classic and traditional Christmas movies of all times.

1) It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) – James Stewart plays the role of George who helps others instead of pursuing his own dreams. Overwhelmed with life, George decides that on Christmas Eve he will end his suffering but an unforeseen guardian Angel comes to help him change his mind.
