New York City 1895, young May Convery dreams of being a great and inspiring poet. Her piano teacher Mike Bernard dreams of making his mark in the music business. The two become in twined together in a forbidden romance that changes their future forever. As the rag takes over the music industry, Mike finds his way to becoming “The Ragtime King of the World”. Mike tries to enjoy his fortune and fame but is tormented by his secret past with May. Over the years, May reaches her dreams but holds bitterness towards Mike for how he had betrayed her. There is one secret that May never shared over the years and because of all that is at stake, she may never.
As ragging was the newest style of music, the author used some historical facts and characters to bring the story to life. She allows you to follow the characters in such a way that you can see how each character plays a part in the rise and fall of the ragging era.
Though I wish the author would’ve included a last conversation between Mike and May, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Make sure you read the “Author’s Note” because it tells you a little more about the real people involved and history behind the story. It’s very interesting.
