Working in a home office space that has a positive energy flow can help reduce stress, increase focus and boost productivity.

Feng Shui uses compass directions (North, East, South, West, Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest) to determine how to place things for good energy flow. You can find your own directional flow chart here based off of your birthday information.

Now there are skeptics that choose not to believe in the power of Feng Shui but if you can change just a few things to create a feeling of harmony and positivity, then why wouldn’t you at least try it?

Use the tips listed below to see if you can create a positive energy home workspace:

  1. Define a space that you feel good working in. If you already have a defined home office room then half the job is done. If not, you will need to define a space that you feel you can be most productive in without distractions or interruptions. You don’t want it to be too big so that it makes you feel overwhelmed or swallowed up by the hugeness but you don’t it so small that you feel cramped up in a small space with no room to move freely. You want it to be where energy flows freely and you feel comfortable.
  2. Colors and brightness. You want your workspace to have good lighting especially if you don’t have a window to bring in the natural light. Using lighter colors can help lift your mood and give the room a sense of openness but you can determine what Feng Shui colors will work for you by clicking here.
  3. Remove any clutter. Clutter is definitely a no – no when creating any positive energy space. Clutter creates negative feelings of being overwhelmed and can block creativity, productivity and energy flow. Only keep the things that you need in the workspace to function so that everything is neat, tidy and accessible.
  4. Have clear pathways and doorways. Just like clutter, blocked pathways and doorways can create negative feelings like a sense of being trapped or cornered in with a limited way out. Clear these paths so that communication and energy can flow freely.
  5. Use things that are inspiring. Be careful not to use too many inspiring things so that it doesn’t clutter the whole area but use images, words, art or objects that make you feel happy and inspired to be your best.
  6. Include real plants in your workspace, not artificial. Not only do real plants clean the air but they bring life into the space unlike fake plants. Check the care instructions so that you know what type of lighting and care the plant needs prior to buying.

The placement of your desk/table, the material and shape also play an important role in creating a positive home workspace.

Here are a few dos and don’ts for your desk/table:

Placement:

  • Do ~ Face the direction of North or Southeast.
  • Do ~ Have a wall or something solid behind you like a high-back chair.
  • Don’t ~ Have a window to your back.
  • Don’t ~ Have the door to your back.
  • Don’t ~ Have other sharp edged objects facing towards you.

Material:

  • Do ~ Use material and/or accents that compliment your Chinese zodiac sign. (For example, mine is the Tiger with the element of wood.)
  • Do ~ Pick a desk that fits your personality and style.

Shape:

  • Do ~ Choose a rectangular desk or curved desk.
  • Don’t ~ Choose a desk with sharp corners. (Look for rounded corners.)

Remember that it all comes down to how a space makes you feel.

If something doesn’t feel right or mesh with you, just remove it. When you come into the workspace you want to feel peace, harmony and positive energy. Positive energy attracts positive energy.
