Every year me and Steven try to plan a weekend getaway for our anniversary. I think it’s an important time to not only celebrate but to reconnect as a couple. This year we decided to spend it in the rich, historical town of Charleston, SC. With no agenda, the only thing that was a “must do” for me was to visit Fort Sumter because I hadn’t been there since I was a kid.

Day 1 after checking in at the Hyatt House, we decided to walk down King’s Street to find us something to eat. There were plenty of places to choose from but we decided to grab a burger and fries at John King Bar and Grill.
Satisfying our need for food, we continued down the street on our mission to reach the battery. You can find beauty almost any which way you turn in Charleston from parks to statues to houses and buildings. Charleston is rich in beauty and history.
To end a great day of touring the city, we headed back to the room. Waiting for me was roses and chocolates with a note from the hotel wishing us a happy anniversary. Super sweet ending to our first day.
Day 2 of our Charleston adventure, we decided to head out to Patriot’s Point to visit the USS Yorktown and USS Laffey. Being a naval and maritime museum, there is a lot to see, learn and appreciate. Though a storm cut our visit a little short, we still enjoyed all the history that Patriot’s Point had to offer.
Day 3 starts out with going back to Patriot’s Point to catch a boat ride on the Spirit of Charleston to visit Fort Sumter. It is about a 30 minute narrated boat ride to get to the fort but the boat has comfortable seating with great views. Even from the inside, I got to catch a glimpse of dolphins swimming nearby.

With plenty of time left in the day, the next stop was going to be Folly Beach to get a little food, see the sights and do some shopping. Loggerhead’s Beach Grill is where we landed to get a bite to eat.
Next we decided to walk out on the pier to enjoy the view. This was my first time at Folly Beach and I’m already wanting to come back to stay when the weather is warmer.
To end our day we headed back to Charleston and stopped by the Sweet Belgium to satisfy our sweet tooth before going back to the hotel.
Day 4 we begin the day at Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens. Rich in history, this plantation is totally worth visiting. We started our tour with a presentation about the Gullah culture. Next we walked to the boat house and then to the nine original slave cabins. Each cabin had a different theme that walked you through “Black History in America”. Lastly we toured the house and gardens.
After leaving the plantation, we were on a mission to find somewhere good to eat. That’s what led us to one of the best barbecue places around, Smoke BBQ. If you ever go, you really need to try their famous hash & grits because it’s awesome.
To wrap up our last evening in Charleston, we decided to go on the Pleasing Terrors Ghost tour with Mike Brown. As Mike takes you down different streets, he tells you ghost stories that people have reported and the history that ties in with the story. It was pretty cool to learn about some of Charleston’s hidden history. You can even listen to Mike’s Pleasing Terrors podcast to get more ghostly stories.
Unfortunately that was the end of our great trip to Charming Charleston. I know it won’t be the last time we visit but this was truly a memorable anniversary trip.
