One of the most visited beaches in South Carolina, Myrtle Beach has become a hot spot for tourism. I have been visiting Myrtle Beach since I was a kid and it has been interesting to watch how it has changed over the years. This year we decided to take our second mini vacation at this iconic family friendly beach.

Last minute reservations at the Crown Reef is where the journey begins. (Just a side note, I do not recommend staying here due to the hotel needs a lot of updating and repairs. We did not enjoy our stay at this hotel.) Once we got checked in, we took a peek of the view from the balcony and went to find food (of course) at The Barrel Sports Bar & Grill which I totally recommend because the food was great!
For the last 3 – 4 years my husband, Steven, and I have made it a tradition to visit the Waccatee Zoo every time we go to Myrtle Beach so that he can visit Clyde, the camel. It’s a great family friendly zoo with lots of animals to see, nature trails and antiques. This was first time that we actually got to meet the owner and his grandson. He told us about some wild deer that has been showing up and Steven talked to him about Clyde. Totally a great day to spend at the zoo.
The next day was an all day, beach day. Soaking in the sun and riding the waves on the “banana boat” which is actually just an over-sized float with handles. I have to say I did enjoy the ride but you really have to hold on because the jet ski pulls you pretty fast and it takes you out pretty far.
The weather wasn’t cooperating with us this day but I was able to capture a rainbow as the storm was passing through. It was cool to watch as the storm was crossing over the ocean. It was definitely an inside day used for napping and watching TV.
Later that evening we decided to find something to do that wouldn’t require us to be out in the rain so we checked out the Pirates Voyage dinner show. Family fun that was totally worth every penny! I wasn’t able to take pictures during the show but I did capture a few from the pre-show and when we were seated. Dinner and a show, what more could you ask for on a rainy day at the beach?
On our last day we decided to spend most of the day at the beach again but no “banana boat” this time. Collecting sea shells is more my speed and it’s a good thing because while I was collecting sea shells, I heard someone yell shark. Next thing you know the lifeguard was getting everyone out of the ocean. I couldn’t get to my phone in time but I seen two dark fins sticking up out of the water where we had been swimming about 15 minutes earlier. That was our cue to go back to the hotel and plan our evening at Broadway at the Beach. Broadway has something for everyone including restaurants, shopping, carnival rides, attractions and more. It’s a one stop shop for the whole family. Our first stop was the Key West Grill for a great meal with a view. We spent the rest of evening looking through the shops and it ended with a ride a ride on the Ferris wheel. A cool ending to a great trip.
In a blink of an eye, our mini vacation was over but Myrtle Beach has so much more to offer and I can’t wait for our next visit. Even though the hotel stay was not pleasant by any means, we still had a great time. If you have any recommendations for someone visiting Myrtle Beach, leave a comment below.
